The story

The turning point in the battle came when King Harald's 'best men' who had been concealed beside the river, took advantage of the falling tide to cross the beck beside the river Ouse. Only a small force led by Earl Edwin, Morcar's brother, was able to confront them. Once across the beck,  the English had to retreat.
