The timetable after the battle is rather intriguing - The battle took place on a Wednesday, but history tells us that it was Sunday before King Harald and Earl Tostig accepted the submission of the citizens of York. The city is only 30 minutes walk from the battlesite so there must have been good tactical and strategic reasons for not moving on to seize the city more quickly.
